caricature- Kim Martel socket nose! Katie Lawter hair! Katie face mixer! Mike/Brieann face melt! Lauren sushi cupcakes! (AUG 2009)

*11-10-09* so I guess I exceeded my photobucket bandwidth. pics will be back up on the 12th. then I'm going to move pics to another account, sorry about that, folks! gonna start moving a few pics so at least there's something to see in a bit...

*ALSO, if you want to see some caricatures that are a bit older (still updating with newer ones) check out my deviant art page at  http://chrischua.deviantart.com/

1. This is the soccer playian kickassian, Kim Martel, and fellow caricature artist at Dorney park. I, on the other hand, am a kickASIAN, heh. This is the second caricature I've done of her- I drew her last year. I like it enough, but still feel like I could have captured her mouth better and I tried something with the background elements that didn't quite work out. Oh, I just threw myself in the reflection in her eyes. Kim has taught me to be careful not too give my goldfish too much water to drink or else they might get bloody noses ;P

2. Flora Robertson. a first year caricature artist that is tremendously talented. and there's my good buddy, Matt Zitman, again in the background, being all Zitman-y. oh and check out the awesome caricature demos in the background- drawn by my other good buddy, Alex Clare, and googley-eyedified improved by Matt and I, hee hee.

3. Katie Lawter. Another 1st year caricature artist that has some impressive skillage. this caricature literally took me forever. seriously, it was more like fiveever. hooray for bad puns, heh! I started over a bunch of times. I missed on her eyes too. oh well, I'll get her next year.

4. Jeff Muniz. airbrush artist and all-around good dude. eh. I missed on likeness but I like some of the lines.

5. another of Lauren Miller. this one was done really quickly. I seem to always draw Lauren really creepy, haha, even though she's like the sweetest girl ever. ha ha, one day I will draw her supa cute.

and here we have awesome "sushi" cupcakes that the aforementioned lovely, Lauren, made for us. she put swedish fish and rice crispies on top. left to right: Alex Clare, Lauren, Matt Zitman, Meself. I love our employees!

6. Katie Stahl. 2nd one of 2nd year caricature artist. I was seeing how far I could push it. I like aspects of it, but don't think it quite came together as much as I had envisioned.

7. Kate Santee. a 4th (or 5th?) year caricature artist. She's also a very very talented artist. She does some great character designs. 1st one I drew of her. I missed on her eyes. I liked the hair.

8. This is my friend and caricature artist, Mike Dias and his cool girlfriend, Brieann. I had an idea and went with it. not sure how well the likenesses are but I think it's kinda fun and really enjoying trying things like this.

cool music to check out- MoZella

in the vein of Lenka/Lilly Allen/Adelle. fun catchy, checky it out. the whole album is pretty conchristantly good. you can listen to all of her new album on her myspace here

My Marvel interview for "Strange Tales #3"! + 2 preview pages! comes out Nov 4!

Hey folks! Marvel comics interview me about the short I wrote and illustrated for "Strange Tales #3"called "Suenami Cupcake!" They just posted it on their website at www.Marvel.com! you can read it HERE! Some of it might bore you as I tried to be serious to get across some actual information...but I did try and throw in some of my usual silliness :) thanks to Sean T. Collins for the interview!

*NOTE! the pages they posted in the interview that I drew for some reason the colors are WAY whacked out, I think they didn't switch over to RGB (the proper format for viewing color on the web) when they posted it. I mean the colors ARE really whacked out, but it's even too whacked out what they posted, heh. so below is more like what it looks like*

Check back as I'll prolly post some behind the scenes extras and explain some things! :)

and here's the cover to look out for when the book comes out next week! Nov 4! and more info about the book at Marvel.com's website! here

or on my other post on my blog here

caricatures: Sharing a mouth! roller coast-eary! Zitman/Chua collab reject! romantic turtle! your WHALEcome!! and more!(AUG 2009)

Here's some of the better sketches drawn at Dorney Park, PA during this past August 2009. comments, crits, ones you liked and didn't always appreciated!

1. I like the way the guy came out, silly and fun. the girl is ok, could have been more exaggerated cuted more. that's right I said, cuted! his earring on her head is weird and fun. that's right I said fun! oh, well I guess "fun" is a normallyed used worded. aaand I'm doned.

2. these folks were in the army and asked if I could do something Rambo-ish. It came out decent, nothing too stylized crazy. I was using my brain juices more for figuring out the bodies which usually what happens when I'm doing bodies that I don't have as clear an idea.

3. these girls were really chatty and loud, then when their friends came to watch and laugh they got really nervous. I thought that when they saw it that it was gonna be bad but oddly enough they liked it and had a good laugh. I was pretty happy with it and that I could connect their mouth and teeth togethery. oh and I drew my wonderful co-worker, Lauren Miller, in the braces cause she was working with me at the time.

4. I like her big hair shape and some of the contrasting shapes. think the woman could have been more graphic and funner. they were a bit shocked when they saw it but were still good sports. oh and I like the way I drew the part in her hair- odd, simple and graphic.

5. the only requirements they asked was to make something "romantic" they liked it. I drew my buddy and co-worker, Alex Clare, as the turtle again. I thought it was fun and liked that I didn't really draw in any hair for the girl with a marker and just used the color stix.

6. I missed on the likeness but thought the body was fun. he said he liked partying and basketball so I combined them.

7. just a nice one.

8. hmm...at the time I drew it, I thought I really got the girl. looking at it now, eh, not as much. think mouth is too big.

9.

10. I was about to really jack up her face...but was one of those things where I drew a blank and couldn't really figure out a way to really push it. and I didn't want to sacrifice likeness too much. eh and even the likeness is not as strong.

11. I like this one and that line from her pony tail to her sis's hair.

12. there's some fun crazy loopdee loop connect lines. woman is kinda tame and likeness on guy is iffy which is what can happen when I do complicated connect lines when I'm trying to force a face into a connect line- restricts me, that's usually the trade off. you can see the guy from the next pic in the background waiting to get drawn...

13. ...and here he is with his wife. they were great and appreciate. I was pretty happy with this mostly cause of the cool connect lines

14. I like this one, some very appropriate rollercoaster-y connect lines. prolly one of my more intense long connect line...woman's likeness and lack of exaggeration were sacrificed to line up the connect lines again though. I like that I had her holding on to his ears, I should do more of this kind of stuff.

15. ugh. this is a fail. she wanted a body sketch but didn't know what she wanted and said the dreaded "do whatever you want" line. which can be awesome but at the same time not cause you have TOO many possibilities and so you are asking yourself, well, I like drawing weird and crazy stuff so I could just do that, but the angel side of me is like, well, I'm not sure if they're gonna like what I do and there's a part of me that really wants them to like it and obviously buy the drawing. So, I went with--I'm just gonna do whatever silly stupid idea I get. I thought her hair looked sorta like a pineapple so I'm thinking, yeah! I'm gonna draw her as a pineapple! so I'm doodling and doing my thang until I realize, I'm not exactly sure how to draw a pineapple (ironic, I know, since I had thought that she looks like a pineapple) but moreso the specifics of how the texture on the skin of it went. anyhoo, I don't think it worked out so well and I pretty much gave up halfway thru it. but it is really stupid looking in a silly semi fun way so I thought I'd let you folks see it.

16. the background blue on the right side of her makes her look kind of pixel-y. huh...

17.

18. looking at this now, I didn't realize how wacky it looks, heh. I like it though. he bought a frame for it too, yay!

19. I like this one. I like when things come together nicely with their similar chins as one, well, sorta, heh.

20.

21. yay! drawing old people is fun!

22. hey look, it's matt zitman in the background

23. it's ok. what I found amusing was that these people were visiting from China and they came all the way to the U.S. to experience an american theme park and their unique souvenirs, like their 1st caricature!...that was drawn by me. another asian. heh. it's not really that funny, but on paper it's kinda ironic.

24. some fun connect lines but otherwise I should have pushed it way more.

25. a really nice couple. I should've separated their faces, lacks depth.

26. I thinned him out too much and wrong choice in face shape. I just like this for the way I did the hair/hairline.

27. I've wanted to try the small girl body holding on to a big guy thing, this is the 1st attempt. I think it's fun and cute.

28. nice guy. their family watching me really enjoyed it. I think they were from Ireland.

29. I like this one. Zitman said I missed on the girls mouth...I can see what he's saying. and I sorta missed on the likeness on the guy. picked the wrong proportions a bit. hmm...well, maybe I don't like this one as much, heh. oh, I know what I liked, I liked that they share the middle line for their faces- his outline is the reverse of hers and vice versa- like a puzzle piece. I've done a few more like that coming up.

30. I like the minimal lines here.

31. the guy asked me to put a coke can on her dairyaire.

32. I like the contrasts and strong lines and shapes here.

33. I was really happy with the center line that her face makes up her body and vice versa. like a connecting lego block.

34. I like the way the guy came out. check out the big whoopsie with the guy's arm being impossible to be like that.

35. eyes should have been smaller prolly but it's a cute simple one.

36. guy came out fun, I missed on the likeness on the girl- mouth too big.

37.

38. heh

39. their family loved it. I'm not so sure he liked it or got it, heh.

40. I like the coloring on this one.

41. another sharing middle face line. girl could have been more exaggerated

42. I like this one. it's silly and fun. you may ask why draw people's eyes on other faces? um. why not? heh. this sketch got me the next sketch...

43. these people were awesome! they watched me draw the previous one above and waited to get drawn by me. they said they get caricatures done but are pretty picky with artists that draw them. it was cool that the one they saw me do was one where I did more my thing. cause sometimes I'll just draw a tame bland one and others will see and want that and then I have to do another bland boring one. they had cool faces and I liked how the connect of her nose to him came out. it was more of a different connect than I usually do, I think. I was pretty happy with this one.

44.

45. I like his chin forming her neck combo. the date in the background they wanted, I think it was their 1st date or something like that.

46. so it was WAY past closing time and they really wanted a caricature, I said, "ok, I will stay and draw you but it's going to be really really funny" they agreed. their family was cracking up as I was drawing it. when they saw it, the older sister was pretty surprise and HATED it. the younger one liked it and understood it was suppose to be funny. whatever, I gave them a few bucks off and still made them buy it. not really my best or anything either.

47. I like that I really tried to simplify her face into a circle. guy could have been more pushed more but it's still fun.

48. I missed on the guy on the left a bit.

49. drawing the facepaint was actually pretty fun. they had it done earlier by one of our facepainters in the park--the ambili eating and exqchrisite, Carla Horner, painted it :). the dad really liked the caricature, the girls seemed more confused about it and I like nestle's Crunch bars. well, it's got rice in it so obviously, I'm all up in that.

50.

51.

52. I liked how the coloring came out, especially on the girl, her cheeks.

53. these people were from europe somewhere. good sports and their family was liking it as well.

54.

55. I like the circle forehead of the little girl.

56.

57. so this guy comes up and wants to be drawn with a body but doesn't know what kind of body. he asks me what else I can draw. I ask him what he likes, he goes football. he asks what else I can draw and I spout out a big list of possibilities. nothing really catches his attention. then he goes what about football, heh. I was like ok, heh. he said he also likes grilling. Zitman was there and says, you should have him doing both. I didn't know it at the time, but Zitman said he usually likes to suggest that to make it harder and piss off other caricature artists but actually I like that idea of combining multiple activites and something I try to push more now. anyhoo, I liked the way this came out, it's fun. I'm slowly trying to improve my bodies so it's not something I dread as much and deem as going to make my picture suck more. I still like drawing just faces the best. oh and I drew Zitman as the guy getting hit, heh.

59. ha ha, Zitman was trying to get this kid's mom to let him draw the kid but the mom kept blowing him off. I guess she was waiting for me for some reason, ha ha. again, ironic this kid and mom were from Japan and wanted another asian to draw her kid. It's like going to Japan and instead of eating their Japanese cuisine instead going to McDonalds and chopping off your legs so you'll be shorter. wait, what?!

60. me likes it.

61. I thought it was cute and sweet. the girl was a bit surprised but cool enough with it, I think.

62.

63. so I walk up to one of our stands about to start my shift and I see my co-worker finishing up a sketch and then they are at the counter and it turns out the guy left his wallet in the car. so the girl stays and the guy goes to his car. then it turns out the guy forgot his keys so now the girl goes to give it to him. As I'm standing there with my just my co-worker, I go, hmm...do you think they don't want the sketch and are just trying to be slick and leave? heh. but sure enough, they come back, pay for it. so my co-worker leaves to go on break and this same couple comes back and says they aren't happy with the sketch. I ask them what is wrong with it, usually it's because it's that they think it doesn't look like them or that it's too funny. they said that the picture wasn't funny enough and that they just wanted a funny sketch to laugh at. hah! well that was a welcomed answer. I didn't go THAT funny and rushed it a bit more cause they already sat for 1 sketch and didn't want them to sit for too long. As I was drawing it, there was a guest behind me that was dieing with laughter at the sketch and said they were gonna come back and get one, which they did...

64...and here they are. These people were awesome, like I said, these people saw me draw a funnier one and wanted a funny one as well. I wish I had more time to work on this but there was a crazy hail/rain storm that was passing by as I drew this so I had to hurry it up as the rain was pouring down like crazy.

65.

65. this kid wanted a body but didn't know what he want (for some reason I had been getting that more than not during this time) and so I went down a whole list of ideas, nothing really clicked with him. again, football was the one he was leaning towards but I said to add something with it so it's more interesting. he said he liked the new GI Joe movie and liked Storm shadow. I was like, how about a samurai, it's got swords like a samurai and he was cool with it. I added the Michael Vick of the Eagles and of the infamous dog fighting ring incident he spent time in jail for. I added the chopping of ruff ruff too, heh. his friend was watching me draw it and said, "that is a very aggressive picture" heh. I thought that was just a funny statement from like a 12 year old kid.

66. I like the grampa. the youngest came out a bit creepy and not as cute as it could have been.

67. this one is mostly cool for the non use of marker hair.

68. turtle on kids shirt!...actually, they said it was a dinosaur. but I'm SAURy, I want it to be a turtle!

69. thought this one came out pretty solid all around.

60. hmm...eyes could have been wider apart and lower. Zitman said the kid looks creepy but I think it still looks cute-ish.

61. speaking of my buddy, Zitman, I drew him getting stiff armed. I drew myself in the kid's eye reflection too.

62. hee hee. her eyes crack me up. I like this one.

63. this is a another live sketch collaboration. I started it off by drawing the girl on the left then Zitman drew the girl on the right. they didn't like it and it was rejected. said they looked evil or something. oddly enough, both Zitman and I BARELY pushed it, it's easiest THE most tame collab sketch we've done and our 1st collab reject. oh well. we did another one in September that was cooler, I'll post that when I go thru September's sketches to post.

64. ahh...and this is whale-y that I drew up. So as a park caricaturist or as a park employee you will be asked several questions a day. things like, where's the bathroom, where is this rollercoaster, etc, etc. and then usually, after we tell them the answer they will say thank you! well, I decided to draw this whale and put it on our easel out in front and when the guest says, thank you, I say, "your whalecome!" and point to the whale and go, get it? eh? eh? then they just usually smile at me or look at me funny. and then I feel all warm and gooshy inside, heehee. so that's become my new thang and I've gotten other employees to do that as well, heh. so turtle, smurtle, it's the new era of the whale now! :)
--------------------------------------------------------

well, this was pretty much the end of the busy summer season. there's still some pretty cool and crazy ones that I did in Sept and October coming up soon. I'll post those soonish!

caricatures- Sharkman! Eyes on people's faces! potato chin! potato kid! Zitman/Chua collab 4! Meg dumbell! Braces y'self (JUNE 2009)

Here's all the better sketches I did during the month of JUNE 2009 at Dorney Park, PA. BOO-YAH!

1. the guy on the right asks his other buddy, who was watching me draw them, if I was almost done the drawing yet and his buddy responds "...I have no idea" ha ha ha, I draw weird, what can I say! ha ha, and especially if it's not colored in yet, it looks really confusing. I tend to jump around a lot too instead of finishing one face and then moving on. that's one of my favorite lines from a guest now, hee hee. these guys were a bit shocked when they saw it but were cool about it.

2. I like the eye to cheek lines. I just threw those lines down and luckily it lined up with the eyes and I so I put them in. they bought a large frame with it too, woo hoo!

3. demo. trying things

4. 'nother demo.

5.

6. could have made his hairline lower.

7. he didn't want his braces in the sketch. I think people should emBRACE their braces. ha ha! see what I did there? me so clever, I'm going to win an award for most cleverestness! can't wait! I also wrote that on his shirt as well. I like the weird connecting of his pupils to eyelid. and mouth to eye.

8.

9. his chin to her hair part connect line. I liked the way his face came out- simple and fun. saw the movie "9" it was decent. cool visuals, ok story. needed more action or wow moments for me. I only paid 7 bux to watch it though. which was one of the best things Matt Zitman has ever taught me, hee hee...

10. Matt Zitman as a soccer ball. well...sorta, Matt's usually not that happy, ha!

11. should have given him more upper lip to nose area and less upper lip. connect line from his ear to her head.

12. these people were cool. I think I could have pushed more on the girl on right but overall I was pleased enough with how it all came together. the connect line of his head to her lips is kind of a different one than I usually do.

13. better likeness on the guy. woman's eyes too big

14. nothing too crazy. made the right kid's eyes too big and close together. I like his hair line with color.

15. I drew myself in the reflection of his glasses. *caution- objects reflected in sunglasses are weirder...I mean awesomer than they appear*

16. eh. ho-hum sketch. I put my co-worker, Meg Grube as a turtle dumbell though. oh and I'm definitely not saying Meg is dumb or anything, she's actually quite the smarty pants, just wanted to put something irrelevant in the pic and put a co-worker in there.

17. the girl had a ho-hum attitude when getting the sketch and had an equally ho-hum non expression attitude after seeing it and paying for it ho-hummingly.

18. random note: I watched the 2nd episode of the new season of the Office today and that show still rules! they keep coming up with great new stories that progresses the series and it's still hilarious and clever. awesome possum!

19. turns out the girl is a classically trained artist for many years but never drew cartoons and after watching me draw one prior, finally decided to get one...which is kinda nice, but then I do remember feeling a bit more pressure. I think I tried a bit too hard and overthought it a bit and it came out stiffer and less fun than I could have done, especially on her face. they liked it though and it was better than the one she watched me draw...but still, I wished I had this one back to do over and went looser and funnerest.

20. ahh...my favorite college shirt to draw! :) also, man! I'm pretty darn good at drawing really vertical and really horizontal lines, if I do say so myself!

21. I like this one.

22. a demo I really liked. him and his friends liked it too. I'm gonna rhyme that previous last word with the word shoe. woo hoo!

23. ha ha, this one was fun- goo goo!

24. I like this one for the most part except for the coloring shape on his cheek, bad shape. it needs a spanking- boo hoo :(

25. the kids of the one right above. I drink chocolate milk whenever I go to Old Country Buffet- moo moo!

26. I missed on the "trying not to show my teeth so I'm going to clench them" look. the eyes are off a bit too and too much forehead. hmm...wonder why I'm even posting this one...I guess I still like the overall vibe of it and it looks enough like her, I suppose. I like cherry coke, I really do!

27. man, I told her I was going to draw her really really funny and she was cool with it, and it was one of those times where I just couldn't really figure out how to really push her face. oh well, I think I got her likeness though. I really try not to exaggerate for the sake of exaggerating and don't want to sacrifice likeness. although at times, especially in a live setting where you don't have AS much time to carefully plan things out you have to take a chance and go for it and sometimes the bold exaggeration works out sometimes it doesn't. even still, she was quite shocked about what I did. luckily I didn't do a crazy one, prolly would have been a reject and her head would have popped off too.

28. this was a fun cool dude. can't think of anything else to rhyme, oh poo.

29. some unwanted wonkiness throughout, mostly the eyes which I sometimes tend to do when I don't go as crazy and try to draw "nicer." but overall, it's a nice cute sketch..hmm...prolly should have made the bottom kid's eyes a bit smaller and further apart.

30. messed up the lines on the guy's nose a little. I like how her eyes and hands came out. connect line from his mouth to her shoulder. some softer coloring style to mix it up, never sure what I like. I tend to lean towards leaner meats, wait what? I mean I usually lean towards a more textured coloring but sometimes I like the softer blended transitions.

31. hmm...prolly could have made it a bit more cute. I like the sharing of cheek/eye but their eyes are too close together and placement wise looks bad.

32. this was a demo that his parents (or guardians or adults he came with?) bought afterwards. could have been a better likeness but he had such a distinct face and I think I got enough of that that it still works. I drew outside in with drawing the face shape 1st, which I don't do as often as I'm not as confident with and tend to mess up my porportions which messes with likeness...but my instinct was that I wanted to capture the immediate essence of what made him him so I tried it that way. plus just to mix it up and do things where you aren't sure the outcome is gonna work is a nice challenge and keeps it fresh. his group he came with loved it.

33. you can't really see it in the photo, but the guy was smaller in real life and I wanted to play that off. I like how her eyes came out- I tried pushing it more graphically and less literally which is an easy trap to fall into. also an easy trap to fall into are holes covered by leaves...unless the hole is inside a house then you're just stupid if you fall(literally) for that...unless your house is lined with rugs that has a leaf motif then....touche'

34. I think this one came out shape-errific-ish. and the coloring actually complemented it nicely for once- still trying to figure out how I want to color things, I keep trying and bouncing around different ways. anyone remember the tv show "who's the boss?" with Tony Danza? he actually sang the star-spangled banner at a Phillies baseball game I went to last week (thanks to Jess- she rocks!) that's why I put "who's da boss" on his shirt.

35. Zitman watched me draw this and said I missed the likeness on the girl and I was like "what? I thought I got her..." then later on I looked at this picture I took and it was like "oh. yeah, you're right. poo" It happens a lot when you are in the moment and you feel like you are doing it right and then when you look at the picture afterwards you see all the mistakes you made. anyhoo, I still like how the guy came out a lot and actually the overall pic I like and I didn't miss on her too bad, should have made her mouth smaller/bigger nose and wider apart eyes- sometimes when I tell them to turn a 3/4 view when I draw them, I miss on the eye distances.

36. I liked how this came out, he did too.

37.

38. these girls were super loud and a handfull. then their friends came by and were scaring them on how the pic was turning out, which usually turns out bad as their friends scaring them gives them the anticipation of what it's going to turn out makes it a lot worse than what the actually sketch is...although in this case it's prolly worse than even their worst thoughts, heh. anyhoo, I was expecting this to go down bad, but oddly enough, they loved it and thanked me. go figure. go turtle in braces as well. my co-worker, Tony Dong, was hanging around so I put him in the braces for fun.

39. sometimes when you meet people you immediately get a good vibe. that they're good people, don't take themselves too seriously and will like a good fun caricature. these people weren't, they were horrible. ha! just kidding, I pulled the old switcheroo! so yeah, I got a good vibe from this nice couple, especially the girl, who was always smiling, laughing and excited. I'm glad I caught that expression of hers. the guy came out ok, felt like his likeness could have been a bit stronger but it was still fun.

40. this couple watched me draw the previous couple and waited for me to draw them. sometimes I feel bad cause they refused another artist cause they wanted me to draw them. which happens to everyone and myself as well. although it's understandable, as I'D be really picky if I got one done, but at the same time you do feel a teeny bit of "aww man, what's wrong with my work?" syndrome when someone says "oh, we want to wait for that other artist." but I'd rather them get what they wanted then get something else or it turn into a reject cause they really wanted one from another artist. but at the same time, if people are waiting for me, I'm flattered. So, if someone is watching me drawing a more exaggerated one, then I try to one up it even more, partly cause they already saw what I do and partly it's to back up my fellow artist in that maybe if I pushed it TOO much they'll be like "hmm, maybe we should have gotten it done by the other artist when they asked and plus we just waited extra long for this" anyhoo, the guy was a bit shocked, heh. I liked his chin meshed to her meshed hat combo platter.

41. demo. I like doing stuff like this and was real happy with it. the t-shirt gag I did was I changed Hurley to "Hurl" which is a game show where they have contestants do competitive eating then they put them in some sort of crazy device, like they strap them to a maching that spins them upside down. and sees who vomits 1st loses, it's hurl-arious. that's right, I said it! oh, so as I was drawing this this woman comes up behind me and says she really likes what I'm doing and I'm kinda surprised as this one is a bit out there, and at first I thought maybe she was just being nice and really didn't know what she was looking at, and so I asked her "really?! you know what this is?" and she pointed out all the features and she did know. so that was cool. then she says something that I (and other caricature artists hear a lot) that I should go work for Disney. as if it's easy to work for Disney. but then my response to that (and what I say a lot) is that sure that might be great, but for ME, I like knowing that a good amount of the drawings I'm doing are going up on people's walls which can't be said about those Disney artists, which isn't a knock on them. as I'm sure they're making WAY more money than I am but I just really really enjoy my job doing live caricatures and feel that it's a very unique job and has lots of cool unique things to it and I'm drawing a new face and a new challenge every few minutes.

42. this one was funny in that as I was drawing them, the girl on the left was telling me she likes art and specifically surreal stuff. well, how appropriote since I was already making it pretty wacked out and surreal-y. she had this worried smile thing happening, heh. oh and the right girl was eating an icecream cone so I put it in but she had finished before I was done.

43. cheeks!

44. fun faces.

45.these were the kids of the one right above. I should have pushed it just as much as I pushed the mom and dad. that's prolly one of the most complicated coloring background I've done, hah. I was waiting for the baby to get back so I could take a picture, so I had time to kill.

46. these fellow rice-eaters were cool. this was their 1st caricature and they plan on getting more. I missed on the likeness of the guy a bit, should have made his eyes further apart. eyes on lips, hooray! and ruler shirt, heh.

47. I like this one. great faces and size contrasts to play off of. connect line from his cheek to her hairline

48. more eyes on other people's faces, yay! I drew this a few hours later that same day as the other one. guess I just had "eye on people's faces" on the brain. I should have condensed her facial features more and played more with size contrasts. I like the way the guy came out and was happy about her face to his nose connect.

49. potato chin.

50. his friend was laughing while watching me draw him and said that he looks like a potato in the drawing. prolly one of my crazier ones of the season so far. I got another one coming up in August that's pretty whacked out.

51. I like the guy, I made the girl's eyes too big

52. these people had fun faces.

53. Zitman said I missed on the girl but I think I got her. wait, or maybe he changed his mind after seeing the photo again. I forget. also, the other day at the grocery store I accidently grabbed the wrong shopping cart and after strolling it around, I thought to myself "hmm...I don't remember grabbing a giant box of tomatoes...oops." so after about 10 minutes I stroll back to where I think I grabbed the wrong cart and found my original cart (which correctly had a giant bag of rice, of course) and then a guy in another cart points to my cart with a puzzled look and I go, hey, this is your cart, right? ha. he was still confused and didn't seem to be coherent, he sorta muttered to himself "...I left my cart here and then was confused...." but it turned out all right, I tried to play it off all light hearted "...heh. sorry about that, ha ha" and quickly strolled away. awwwwkward, heh. oh and he was asian too. I chastised him about having too many tomatoes and not enough rice in his cart, heh, ok, I didn't.

54. should have made his forehead even bigger and eyes lower, but still pretty cute, me thinks. although I could have picked a more dynamic pose.

55. I missed on the girl but overall I was happy with getting all 5 in with exaggeration, likeness and all the connect lines. middle guy is a little small. when I try to get my connect lines to fit sometimes stuff like that happens, usually it's likeness gets loss like what happened to the girl,

56. guy needs more upper lip to nose area. overall-eh, borderline post worthy.

57. I hate writing words on pictures. that just looks weird and distracting. or I just hate that I suck at writing words. yeah, that's it too.

58. these people were fun to draw. I think I got their vibes. they digged it and the guy shook my hand. happy all around, yay!

59. eyes are a tadapole offa but it'sa cute. it'sa me, mario! I dont' know.

60. ehh...

61. should have made her eyes closer together but I do like the wispy lines of her eyes. I love playing up size contrasts when the sichuawation presents itself.

62. could have made her eyes smaller and more tilted. I liked drawing his shirt and drawing the pikachua.

63. I like the open loose lines here. Matt Zitman makes another apperance as a turtle. you can see Matt's drawing of me playing soccer in the background.

64. I like this one. it's fun and more simple-y. unintentially made her eyes kinda off though, oops. the guy mentioned something about me drawing him as the hulk or something so I just made him muscular-y.

65. haha so this cocky lil kid comes up to me and says how about I draw him for 5 bucks. it was really really slow so I said, sure...BUT it's gonna be really funny. he agreed. as I was drawing him, his friend watching was dying with laughter, making him feel very uncomfortble, he kept saying "oh, man, oh man, is it done?! " etc. etc. covering his face and getting red. not so cocky now, huh, kid? so this is one of those situations where others laughing/heckling build up so much bad thoughts in the guest being drawn's head that they are already so negative. so as soon as I showed it to him, he took it and ripped it apart and said "worst 5 bux I ever spent" ha ha. I made him pay 1st, so still a sale, hooray, me! I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the kid but did manage to snap a blurry one of the sketch before it became food for the garbage can.

66. this was a redraw and usually, I go tamer to make sure we still get a sale. but for this one, I didn't feel like it, cause they rejected my buddy, Shaun Stipick's sketch and I didn't want to go tame for him. His sketches rock and he does some of the best bodies ever! anyhoo, I was kinda happy with how this turned out. I should have made the mom's chin larger, but at the same time, I'm glad I didn't cause I already didn't leave enough room for the baby as it is. that baby was uber cute!

67. should have made her eyes wider apart and smaller...I like all the shapes and coloring shapes though.

68. yay to drawing eyes as lines.

69. oh boy, oh boyo! so this one's got a cool story behind it. so on this day it was rainy and I was hustling trying to get some sales. I see this couple maybe about 20 feet away looking at the stand talking, I was guessing that they were trying to decide if they wanted to get one or not. then they turned away and went on their way. I told, Katie Lawter, my fellow caricaturist, that I should go after them, even though they were pretty far away and it'd be kinda awkward to hustle someone so far away...but sometimes you gotta do stuff like that. so I run after them and told them that I'd cut them a deal if they got one done. the guy says, ok but they wanted to go inside the gift store first...which usually means that they'll never come back. but you, my friend, are a sleuth and know I drew them so you know they'll come back...or DO they?! stay tuned! oh. I guess to right now. So I go back to my stand thinking, yeah, MAYbe they'll come back but you never really know when people say that stuff, we're used to people not coming back after saying they will. So I was wating and telling Katie that I want to draw this guy real bad as well, cause he looked like a shark to me, at least his teeth. Then it starts to rain really hard, boooo. but what's this?! the couple comes back and I was like, "you're back!!" but I couldn't draw them cause it was just raining too hard and the paper would get wet. I said if it lets up, come back and I'll draw ya. So they said they'd go hang in the waterpark pool and then come back if it lets up. so soon after, it did stop raining and actually it was one of those days where it was just a passing rainstorm and then it got super sunny! yay! but I waited and waited and they never came back *tear* I stayed about 30 mintues past my shift, hoping that I'd get to draw shark man...and lo and behold they came back!! hooray! I was soo excited! I sat them down and the 1st thing I say to the guy is "do you like sharks?" he goes "yes" I said, "awesome." and then went along with my sketch. they only asked for color faces but I threw in the shark eating her on the house, heh. they were cool people. yay! oh, I tried to make their faces a heart shape but I dont' think it came out as obvious. and I make a cameo as a sea turtle.

70. this one came out decent. lots of connect lines. I think I prolly missed a bit more on the top left kid, needs more cheeks less lips.

71. more eyes on other people's faces! I liked her hair. and it was fun drawing michael jackson on her shirt.

72.

73. her mouth to his eye brow connect line. the guy was a bit taken back when he saw it. he was like, "wait, are you serious?" heh. hmm...his likeness is missing something, think I made his nose too long.

74. the hat actually came out kinda cool looking in a realisticy rendery way.

75. yay! tiny hands. and sold!

76. 1st collaboration of the season between Matt Zitman (drew the guy) and I (drew the girl). I think this is our 4th one overall. a pretty tame one, especially mine. Matt's is better. Matt is in the background making faces, oh wait, that is his normal face, zing! we haven't done as many collabs this year. we actually did another one the following month that got rejected, and it was the LEAST exaggerated collab we've done too. after that Matt chickened out and doesn't want to collab anymore. I'll post that one in August's caricature post. I'll get him to collab some more before the season ends. I wanna collab with Alex Clare as well.

---------------------------------

so overall, I think this month's stuff is more successful and I'm happier with a lot more of them. August has some good stuff as well, there's actually a few bodies that I was happy with.

let me know what you think as always, which ones you liked, which ones you didn't like, which ones had weak likeness, or what kind of things/styles you'd like to see more of.

August sketches post coming up soonish!

caricature - The Jonas Brothers, Obama & Michelle 2 (MAY 2009)

A Jonas brother demo I drew for our caricature stand. t-shirt shirt.

a quick Obama and Michelle demo for the stand. the Obama is off but I was happier with the Michelle.

caricature- Diomira gumteeth, Dawn Hair, super shapes me (JUNE 2009)

1. co-worker, Diomira Keane. she does some awesome Flapjack and silly cartoon artwork! she actually did some fanart that they used in the actually Flapjack show! pretty cool! this is actually the 2nd one I drew of her. the 1st one I drew a couple hours prior and is right below.

2. here's the 1st one I did of her.

3. Dawn, from Sesame place. I was pretty happy with it except for that line down the right side, I tried to make the line kinda bouncy on purpose but it looks more like sloppy joe.

drew myself on a slow day.

caricatures- Alex Turtle, eyes in ears, Perdue chicken, Lollipop kid, 5 second sketches, (JUNE 2009)

eh. nothing too exciting this month, didn't really start getting into a grove/figuring things out more until the following months (July & August), which I'm going thru the pics now and will post soonish!

1. these people were cool and had a good laugh. they had cool faces. I liked the way the coloring came out on the guy- shapes and simple. I tend to overdo it.

2. was trying to cute-ify the poop out of the drawing. that was a weird statement. should have made her eyes further apart- lost some likeness.

3. WAY too much excitement here, heh. they both pretty much held those expressions the whole time I was drawing them until I showed them the sketch and I got a smile from the girl. yay! I was pretty happy with the likeness on these and overall, I think it was a pretty solid sketch. nothing crazy special but solid.

4. ooooh. this one came out kinda vicious. oopsie. don't think she liked it so much, heh. I like her smile becoming her eye shine.

5. a demo that his parents bought. likeness is not too good, eyes too big, but I like the simplicity and look of it.

6. I like the simple coloring, need to try and do more. I tend to shy away from it cause I think people will think it's "too" simple even though I think it looks better.

7. I took a chance on this one. the 1st line I threw down was that circle of the kids forehead. I didn't plan anything out and just put it down. luckily it worked out nicely and I put the eyes and nose on that line. that is one of those happy accidents that I enjoy. it's nerve-racking but fun when things come together.

8. I redrew this from a previous sale to try out some things.

9. these next few, Matt Zitman and I drew at a special in-park event where we were doing free black and white sketches. we drew super fast, most were 30 seconds or less or WAY less. Matt did some sweet sketches. I took pictures of all of Matt's. Bug Matt to post them on his blog! think this one took me like 5 seconds, heh.

10.

11. I started the sketch with the left side bottom pony tail.

12. hee hee. it's real sloppy but fun.

13. I liked this one except for the pants, I was trying to make them overly large for a funny effect but messed up and made it look kinda like a dress. I like the puddle of drool. all the family said was do anything as long as he's got his lollipop. my dilema was that after I drew in the lolli, I had to draw in his hands to hold it and it was too long, so it looks like he's got an extra long shoulder arm thing.

14.

15.

16. He had such a jackpot face and I messed it up. Should have emphasized his protruding lower mouth and gums. my favorite part of the drawing is that I drew a "Perdue" chicken on his shirt playing off of his Purdue school name, hee hee. seriously, this is the kind of stuff that makes my jello brain dance.

17. I like the feel of this one

18.

19.

20.

21. the parents whispered to my co-worker while I was drawing this kid whether I knew that it was a boy. I did, just drawing what I sees. kid's got long hair.

22. my buddy and awesome caricaturist co-worker, Alex Clare is the left side turtle and Zitman is the other turtle, well, sorta. lots more of them in my sketches coming up soon. this one is pretty tame. it was funny cause I didn't tell them that I was going to put them on turtles and then the woman goes "I love turtles!"

23. demo. mom really liked it and wanted to buy it but kid didn't like it as much and didn't want it. usually it's the other way around.

24. words

25. I liked the coloring on this one.

26.

27.

28.

29.

30.

31.

32. she really liked it. I liked drawing silly shirts like that.

33. his family was laughing pretty hard while I was drawing it. good times. he liked it as well and shook my hand. I could've went for it even more. still haven't been pushing it as much during this time period. I hate writing words on a page. my handwriting is horrible when I don't try hard. Alex Clare in the background.

34.

35. kinda stiff, should have made the left one's nose bigger. I did this 1st in black and white then they wanted it in color.otherwise if I knew it was going to be in coloring, I wouldn' have put in so many lines in the hair.

36. the baby got wonky, I usually draw from inside out, as I feel I have more control and can work out my porportions more accurately. I do mix it up though and when I do work outside in, I do get more interesting solutions and sometimes get more weird lopsidedness, like the baby- I threw down that left side line first then was like, oopsie.

37.

38. demo that I really liked. I like that his eyes are in his ears and was really happy with the coloring. prolly my fav of the month.

39.

40. likeness is off but I like the downshot and the graphic eyes. I also like buffets.

41. more Alex as a turtle. his lip goes into her forhead

43. The guy was kind of neutral the whole time I was drawing them, he was pleasant and all, just really sleepy. but then he lit up and really liked it when he saw it which was cool. I was happy with it. her eye to his eyebrow connect line and they share the center line for their face outline.

44. I like the that the only marker line on the bear is the nose and mouth. it's the best part of the sketch. and the tye dye t-shirt, I love coloring them.

45. couldn't tell if it was a girl or boy. leaning towards boy. I met this girl the other day with 1 leg...her name was Eileen. bada-bing!

I took this picture at the park one day. really weird clouds. like a cartoon or something.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't do anything too crazy this month either. but I just looked thru my photos of ones I did in July and August and they're MUCH better and more exaggerated stuff! a lot more pics to post I think as well. working on July stuff so SOON!

One of my favorite bands Muse, just released a new album called "The Resistance". you can listen to the whole thing at their myspace. I listened to it once, so far, it's decent. good, but not as epic as their last few albums. I think 1 song I really like that stood out. the album cover is gorgeous though. love all the colors.
